March 10 @ Maltz PAC: Cleveland Winds with Cincinnati Wind Band
The Cleveland State University School of Music, The Cleveland Winds, and the Cleveland Youth Wind Symphony (CYWS) groups are excited to host Composer Peter Meechan for a series of wind band concerts. The highlight of the series will be the world premiere of Peter’s Cosmic Cliffs, which was written specifically for the CSU Wind Ensemble.
The final concert in this series will feature a second performance by The Cleveland Winds and their guest ensemble, The Cincinnati Wind Band (CWB) and their director, Jim Daughters. The Cleveland Winds will reprise their repertoire from their March 3 performance. The Cincinnati Wind Band will perform Ron Nelson’s Lauds, John Williams’ Viktor’s Tale with clarinet soloist Nicholas Schlie, Samuel Barber’s Commando March, the world premiere of Nicole Piunno’s The Spirit is Willing, and close with Michael Daugherty’s The Adventures of Jesse Owen. This concert is in Maltz Performing Arts Center on Sunday, March 10 at 3 pm.

The first concert will feature Cleveland Youth Wind Symphony Group 1 and their music director Darren Allen, along with the CSU Wind Ensemble, and their conductor Dr. Birch Browning. In addition to works by Hanssen, Milburn, and McKinzey, CYWS group 1 will perform Meechan’s Song of Hope, featuring CSU trumpet instructor Dr. Amanda Bekeny and CYWS staff member Tim Carlson. The second half of this concert will feature the CSU Wind Ensemble. Their repertoire includes the world premiere of Cosmic Cliffs, Anthony Barfield’s Red Sky, which features CSU student trombonist Andrew Douglas, and Dennis Llanís’ Un Cafecito (A small coffee). This concert is in Waetjen Auditorium at Cleveland State University on Thursday, February 29 at 7 pm, and will be available via livestream at https://facebook.com/ClevelandStateMusic.
The second concert in this series will feature CYWS group 2 and their directors Mark Awad and Michael Komperda, and the Cleveland Winds, with their music director Dr. Birch Browning. On the first half, CYWS will perform Peter Meechan’s Wind of Change, along with works by Ryan Nowlin, Katahj Copley, Samuel Hazo, Nicole Piunno, and Reinhold Glière. The second half of this concert will feature the Cleveland Winds performing Ira Hearshen’s Fantasia on Aura Lee, Peter Meechan’s Perpetua, and Katahj Copley’s groundbreaking new work, DOPE! This concert is in Waetjen Auditorium at Cleveland State University on Sunday, March 3 at 3 pm, and will be available via livestream at https://facebook.com/ClevelandStateMusic.
